Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Iceland is renowned for our hot springs caused by the volcanic activity on the island heating up our underground water supply. While these hot springs can be enjoyed in various shapes and sizes, from almost commercial resort experiences to rural and remote experiences still in their original setting, Hvammsvík Hot Springs is one of the hot spring hot spots that will get you as close to an immersive natural experience as possible, but with all the comfort and convenience you may need.

In this article, we look at what to expect from a Hvammsvík Hot Springs visit, and how to plan and prepare for your trip. So, read on if you want to find out what makes Hvammsvík Hot Springs such a unique and authentic experience that it deserves to be on any Iceland trip itinerary.

Hvammsvik Hot Springs: A Quick Introduction

Hvammsvik Hot Springs is the latest addition to the hot spring family here in Iceland with its doors having officially opened to the public in 2023. But make no mistake, the new construction merely adds to an existing history that goes back thousands of years.

The aim of Hvammsvik is to be in harmony with nature and offer visitors a way to immerse themselves in the Icelandic landscape, giving them the most authentic island experience possible – and with that, they most certainly succeeded.

Hvammsvik allows visitors to lounge in eight natural hot springs lining the Atlantic Ocean coastline, all varying in shapes and sizes with their rocky layout. The hot springs also vary in temperature with the combination of hot spring water and ocean water accumulating in ranges up to 40 degrees Celsius. You will also find changing rooms, showers, a steam room, and a swim-up bar on-site.

And the massive expanse of the ocean serves as the cold pool of the establishment. You’ll also get the chance to partake in all sorts of other fun activities such as paddle boarding and introductory sessions to the Wim Hof method. As if that’s not enough, you can also opt to stay over to extend your Hvammsvik Hot Spring experience.

The History of Hvammsvík Hot Springs

According to Landnama, the Icelandic Book of Settlers, the 1200 acres of land was discovered by the Vikings 1000 years ago. This means that the area has been used since the 11th century. Hvammsvik even played a role in World War II.

Allied forces made Hvammsvik their naval headquarters, and there was a time when almost 40,000 soldiers called it home, and more than 200 ships were moored in the fjord. This was also when Hvammsvik had a bit of a James Bond air about it with the Allied Forces giving it the codename Falcon Beach and Falcon Crest to hide its true location.

    The Folklore Surrounding Hvammsvik

Hvammsvik is home to one of the most famous elf dwellings known as Staupasteinn or Stedji. This elf dwelling comes in the form of a 3-meter-high rock formation standing on the property. Legend also has it that the Elf Queen lives in the hill next to the lodges, so all-in-all, Hvammsvik is alive with elf activity.
