The Soothing Experience of Soaking in the Drangsnes Hot Pots in Iceland

Drangsnes Hot Pots

If it’s rest and relaxation you’re looking for, Iceland is the place to be with hundreds of natural hot springs that can soothe all aches and pains and melt your stress away. The Drangsnes Hot Pots are one of these places and offer peace and calm in a remote part of the country with breathtaking views. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking of visiting.

    Where is Drangsnes Hot Pots?

The Drangsnes Hot Pots can be found in one of the most remote (and still untouched) regions in Iceland, the Westfjords. Drangsnes is a small fishing town there, and the tubs can be found lined up on the shoreline. There are no signs to lead visitors to its location, so most use the white changing house as a “marker”.

    Visiting the Drangsnes Hot Pots

The capital city of Reykjavik is roughly 263 kilometers away, so Drangsnes is not a day outing option from there. Most make taking a dip in a Drangsnes Hot Tub a stop along their Westfjords road trip. Just keep in mind that the Westfjords have many F-roads.

The F-roads in Iceland are kept closed throughout the colder months of the year, so you’ll need to plan your road trip route carefully during these times and always keep an eye on the Icelandic weather forecast.

The Amenities and Facilities at Drangsnes

The Drangsnes Hot Pots look almost exactly like they sound. They are three hot tub-looking pools that are fed by natural hot spring water (which was discovered in the area in 1997). The tubs are all temperature-controlled by adding cold water, so the three tubs give you the option of lounging in a cooler tub, a warm tub, or a super warm tub.

Because of their location, the hot tubs offer a certain amount of privacy not often found at our hot springs or geothermal pools anymore, and nestled along the shoreline, overlooking the ocean, the views are simply spectacular. In fact, since they are located in a more remote region with less light pollution (the town has a population of less than 100!), the tubs have become a prime stop to lounge in while watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky.

Changing rooms and showers can be found across the street, but there are no other facilities and amenities such as restaurants there. Because of local initiative, you will find an honor bar there now where you can grab a beer. Just don’t be that person and remember to leave a donation.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Drangsnes?

The Drangsnes Hot Pots are open to the public and won’t cost you a cent (well, unless you take a beer from the honor bar). So, if you’re traveling on a tight budget, this is the perfect activity to add to your trip itinerary.

Treat Yourself at the Drangsnes Hot Pots

The Drangsnes Hot Pots make the perfect stop along a Westfjords road trip adventure. If this is also the route you plan on going, we highly recommend renting a campervan in Iceland, especially if affordability is a factor. A motorhome takes care of both your transport and accommodation and also allows you to take advantage of our cheap (yet beeeeaaaauuutiful!) campsites.

Traveling in a motorhome also adds to the uniqueness of your journey around Iceland. So, pack your bags, get into your motorhome, and hit the road to the untamed natural beauty still found in the Westfjords, and come and embrace the small fishing village charm and ultimate relaxation found at the Drangsnes Hot Pots.
